What is Change Management Practice? | ITIL article 7

The change management Practice is another important process of ITIL where user will have to learn about how to prepare, manage and reinforce the change. So this is most important process for ITIL 4 foundation exam.

Purpose statement for Change Management Practice :

Before going through the change management we will start with definition of change .

Definition of Change :

Change is any addition, modification or removal of anything that could have a direct or indirect effect on services.

Example :

If customer wants new feature in logistics application. You need to give it through the change management process.And the addition of new process will be called as ‘Change’.

Purpose Statment : 

The purpose of Change Control is to maximize the number of successful IT changes by ensuring that risks have been properly assessed, authorizing changes to proceed and managing a change schedule.

Need of Change management with examples :

The change management practice is important practice for ITIL framework. You need to fit the multiple changes in to specified process. There are following advantages of change management process.

Change management practice acts as a gatekeeper

Managing the Risks :

To Protect the Integrity of existing environment while introducing New or Modified Services is important task. User can manage the risk in change management process.

Historical data analysis for change :

User can trace the data and historical changes so as to resolve the multiple problems and incidents as fast as possible.

Impact analysis and communication :

User need to communicate with the specified stakeholders and need to complete impact analysis. In change management process user can complete these things very easily.

Audit and compliance :

User can track the issues in audit and compliance.

Risk vs Benefit

To summaries the Change management practice will,

1.Manage the Risk : You might get high benefits with low risk.

2.Protect Integrity : It protects integrity of current enviroment.

3.Benificial changes :It enables beneficial changes.

Types of Changes :

User need to raise the change request if he/she wants to make changes in the environment or application. There are 3 types of changes :

  1. Standard change : The change which has low risk,fixed scope and low cost is called as standard change. These are predefined changes.

Example :Server restart in every 15 days to remove cache of server.

2.Normal change : The changes that need to be scheduled, accessed and authorized are called as normal changes.

Example : Oracle Patching activities.

3.Emergency Changes :

Sometimes we require to do changes on high priority basis to resolve P1 or major incidents. Those changes are called as emergency changes.

These changes are High risk,error prone changes which needs to be resolved less than 24 hours.

5% of total changes are emergency changes not more than that.
